We Think Even Mies Would Be Pleased

When we made the decision to redesign the Toronto-Dominion Centre website, we knew that we wanted to do something different. We wanted to convey the power and beauty of the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe design, but we also wanted the new site to fully represent the life and energy of this remarkable community.

We asked Bruce Roberts to capture Toronto-Dominion Centre through illustration. The result is a series of illustrations that beautifully capture our Centre through the eyes of an acclaimed artist. We think even Mies would be pleased.

Profile: Born in England, Bruce Roberts immigrated to Canada at age five. He gave up his engineering studies at McGill to start his career as an artist for The Washington Post.

He also worked on the streets in New Orleans doing portraits and later had the chance to draw celebrities such as Margot Fonteyn, Muhammad Ali and Duke Ellington.

He then did theatre drawings in Quebec for which he won a Canada Council grant. As a professional illustrator and artist, he has done many projects ranging from a 10 ft x 50 ft museum mural to amusing drawings on baguettes and evocative books, one of which won a Governor General Award.

Currently Bruce works in Montreal where he spends his time painting, drawing and teaching.
